Downed plane could alter course of Ukraine fight

PARIS (AP) — The downing of a passenger jet in Ukraine is likely to be a turning point in the country's conflict. But which way it turns depends mainly on who carried out the attack and how convincingly it can be proved to the world.

With suspicion falling heavily on pro-Russian insurgents, the event could provide an opportunity for Russian President Vladimir Putin to disengage from his increasingly uncontrollable allies in eastern Ukraine.

But if enough doubt persists, positions could harden in both Russia and the West. The West could toughen its sanctions against Russia and help Ukraine's military, prompting Putin to dig in for an even higher-stakes battle.

The disaster has already drawn the world closer into the Ukraine conflict, the worst crisis between Russia and the West in a generation.

It also made the fighting painfully real for families from Australia to Amsterdam whose relatives were on Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. And it revealed a danger that most people hadn't contemplated: rebels able to strike beyond their own homeland by pointing conventional weapons toward the skies.

These rebels are well armed with conventional weapons that have destroyed so many lives. Families have been left broken and traumatized and that is so sad. I think wars are somewhat selfish and the results can never be good.

 

Rosa, the Dutch authorities are thinking of sending men in to investigate at the crash site, but it still is super dangerous to set a foot in that place! I don't want to imagine what would happen if one of those guys gets shot! We might be seeing the beginning of the WW3!

 

If i may pitch in,Russia has a very strong history of shooting down commercial airliners,the most recent being the korean airliner,2007,269 passengers.
I guess WW3 is impending..CHina Philippines fight and the one in Middle east..US pitching in to support Philippines..everything points to a war.

 

You know what I think this is going to lead to the third World War. Its been years since we had a pusher for the first two being Germany. I think we need to prepare for the next thunderstorm coming its closer then we think.

 

I don't want to imagine of another war emerging right now, but the way the issue is being dealt with is annoying enough, on another note, am just worried at the rate planes are falling off from the sky...its just queer!

 

I feel the same way, not to sound grim, but it looks like the world is going to hell right now... look at Iraq and Syria right now!! Then look at Israel too, and Ukrain... and now that north Korean idiot threatening to nuke the white house!

 

Same here! Those who aren't traveling anytime soon are lucky, anyone traveling by plane in the next 5 years... hehehe scary! When I fly I fly with United, scary to think the Boeing 777 they use has been in a lot accidents. We never know...

 

Yeah, this isn't the first time. What saddens me the most is the fact those people were normal people like you and me, had nothing to do with those countries and their war, they were on a vacation, just like many of us have done in our lives... minding their own business. Now they're dead and might never get the justice they deserve! Must be awful for the relatives as well... knowing there will be no justice for their loved ones. If we were talking about a plane full of celebrities and politicians, then you can be sure they'd have found whoever did this and punish him.

I was moved to tears when a mom was begging the authorities to return back her son's corpse.Maybe,that was the first ever time i cried for some one else.
You know what,they never will get justice and all the government has done so far for them was to throw away some peanuts money and light candles.

Anyone thinks this was the MH370 in disguise...??..They might have used the plane for what it was needed and then destroyed it..any thoughts on it..?

 

I'm sure celebs are in the list, after all the have a lot cash, fame and even more status than politicians. Most of them have huge egos. Oh yeah, I could imagine what the relatives of certain celebrities would pay to see those who hurt their relatives pay. They could make that happen for real, after all money is a powerful thing but tart a war? Nope, I don't think so, but if Obama had been in that plan then the war would have already started too, for sure. Russia would be on fire right now.

It was moving indeed, I read a lot stories... but the media is stopping to mention all this, very soon it will be forgotten and I can't stop to imagine how frustrated and sad the relatives of those who died must feel, knowing there will be no justice, because the international community doesn't care and this incident took place in the worst place ever.

And yeah, I followed this story very closely... Russia screwed up so bad, yet it seems the rest of the EU countries don't care enough.

Btw, I could definitely see the prices of tickets going down a bit, which is good considering they have been going up in the last years. So isn't all a good thing, but flying with United or any other airline that uses a twin engine plane for a transatlantic flight might not be a good idea.

 

Ha ha..Yeah,there was an advert in the paper that had shelved the prices from Delhi-Moscow-Delhi by nearly 30%..
I couldn't help stop laughing..Why would i want to pay for my death..??
Trellum..Have as many engines as you want,it will be useless against a surface to air missile..

 

Traveling by air was once classified as the safest mode of transportation, not anymore, then we got ferries and ship capsizing, trains running right into people's living rooms...{the Canadian oil train disaster that happened earlier this year}....so finally we'll resort back to archaic ages of walking to try and reach our destinations or what?

 

LOL, or getting to our destination on the back of a donkey or a horse, lol. I honestly feel kinda nervous when I think about flying, accidents do and can happen, now look what's happening with Ebola. Oh yeah, flying to another country or even inside he states in the next months might be awful.

 

Never said I would.... I was just stating that those planes with a twin engine shouldn't be used for long transatlantic flights, never I had in my mind missiles Isn't like planes are downed that often, but the Boeing 777 accidents have happened often and will surely continue to happen, hence I might not fly with United in the future, not for transatlantic flights... the use of the Boeing 777 for long trips is just not ok. Sadly most people don't even think about this, because we tend to trust those in charge of our safety. We at least have the choice who we fly with tho...
