I think our laws are just not at a level where they can truly put texting in the same category as drinking and other motor crimes. There is also the fact that it is almost impossible to prove that some one was texting and driving unless there was a witness. Most people would plausibly deny that they were texting. There needs to be a much bigger campaign to raise awareness on how serious texting and driving can be.

They are distracted from driving, just like if they were drunk or on drugs. You need your full focus when driving, and tragedies like this can result if you lose concentration. I think it's a disgrace that they get off for this, murder is murder at the end of the day and the driver showed their-selves to be extremely careless.

Exactly! I have no idea how the guy was able to just get off scott free. I mean why is it different if he was drunk or texting, the out come was the same and was a result of him being completely reckless.

Good God. Complete let off? That does not seem like justice by any stretch.

They don't. Our lazy politicians are too inept to change them. You'd be surprised at how many states in America have no solid laws against cyber crimes. You can hack away all day here in the U.S. Just so long as you don't target any big fish like cops, the FEDS, government, etc. The average Joe? Sure, all day.

This clearly shows the danger of being in attentive while driving in any manner, but to be texting when you are driving is completely insane, and he should ave been held responsible at least for manslaughter, it seems like. Possibly because it appended ack in 2010, they did not yet have the laws in place that they do now regarding texting while driving. I know I have read of several instances where people have died from doing that, but usually, it is them self that they kill, and not hit someone else.
I am not even sure that talking on the cell phone while driving should be ok, but many people do this, and they say it is not much different from listening to the radio while driving. I know that just fooling around with the radio while you are driving can cause an accident easily also.
People need to realize that they need to just drive and watch what they are doing.
