Any of you who have been following my blog posts will know that we recently discussed the meaning of tint percentages in terms of VLT and darkness. This is an important topic for consideration not just for aesthetic reasons (i.e., you want your car to have a dark enough tint to look good) but for legal issues as well (you don’t want you tints to get you a ticket). In my last post I tried to point out that the legal limit for tint percentages varies from state to state so it is always important for you to check with your local authorities to be sure that your tint falls within the acceptable range. One great way to be sure you are in compliance with state laws is to check websites like TintLaws.com or TintDude.com.

Do you know of any list for Canada?

Here in Nova Scotia I don't believe we have a limit for the back windows. Front doors can't be done at all.

Probably of no use to anyone here as I think you are all on the "other side of the pond" but the laws in the UK are slightly different.

The rear windows you can do whatever you wish with, you can go 100% black if you wanted to and effectively turn your car into a van. At the moment I have limo black 95% tints on the rear windows which allows 5% light to pass through into the car. Front window tints have changed recently and you are now no longer allowed any tint what so ever, however as long as the front tints are not too dark you do tend to get away with it. I currently have 25% light smoke tints on my front windows which allow 75% light through into the car. As for the windscreen, no tint is allowed at all and in my opinion that is for a very good reason.

There is one acception for this though, a lot of manufacturers now offer "privacy glass" which is actual tinted glass instead of a tint film over the glass. They are generally not that dark but if the glass is tinted itself then the rules are different as it was a factory fitted option.

There is also a law against dark tints here too but I don't think that it is as strict as it should be. If you are caught on another offence, like speeding, then it may be added but otherwise you drive around with dark tint unnoticed. Also, you won't get your car passed so owners usually remove the tint and then replace it after they get their ride passed.

To be honest I dont see why tints should be banned totally, yes they prevent visibility somewhat but if you are using your mirrors anyway then there is no problem.

At night I cant see a thing out the back windows other than peoples headlights.

If tints are banned totally then in my opinion vans should be banned too.

In my country, they aren't allowed either. And I agree with that rule. A police officer needs to see the man inside the car. What if he is drunk or doing other illegal things?

I agree. There are many vehicles that don't allow you to see out the rear. My cement mixer for one. The straight truck I drove was the same, and so were the dump trucks.

But most places don't have an issue with tint in the back. It is normally just the front doors and windshield.

They are not allowed at all or just on some windows?

This is a private issue I suppose. If someone wants their faces not to be seen by anyone isn't this thier right as well?
I prefer to have a tinted glass because I don't want people watching me.

For some it could be. For me I just liked the look. I couldn't do the front door windows so people could see me anyway. It does make it harder to see you from the front.

As for the Police issue that @Takedon mentioned. If your allowed to tint your windows then that is something the cops will have to deal with every day. But you can make things easier for them. When I had my tinted windows in my car, I would roll down my window (even though that one wasn't tinted) and put my hands on the top of the steering wheel. That way when they come up to the car they know where my hands are. I would also turn off my music. Less stress for them could mean less stress for me.

There is other reasons to tint the front windowsas well. I am the same as you and dont like to be seen driving but I tinted my front windows to protect the leather interior from sun fade and it keeps it so much cooler so you don't burn sitting on black leather. Plus the added bonus that my arms dont get sun burnt.
