I use a Garmin. I'm happy with it. I just rolled over 10000 kms on my trip. BBM Traffic helped me with finding a better route a couple of times but it did well. It was also great when I needed to stop for food. Just search for it and you can try to plan your stop ahead of time.

I used a Garmin. It was desperately needed since I had just moved to the city and had not a clue. The only thing I didn't like was that there was no way that I could automatically block off bridges from being suggested as a route. I avoid all bridges if I can and darn if that chick didn't love trying to drive me over one. :D

Being able to avoid bridges should be an option for some. Why do you like to avoid bridges?

I have an intense fear of them. I've had it since I was seven years old. I can go over them (at high rates of speed :D) when I have to, but if I can avoid them, I will at all costs. The Garmin always wanted to go over them because they felt it was the fastest route. Even if that was true, the amount of traffic that was sometimes sitting on the bridge would've never worked for me.

I had to find locations past the exit for the bridges, ask for directions to that place and then I could make it the rest of the way and through the tunnels.

    I know, I'm a wimp.

I wouldn't call you a wimp. You have a fear. I'm not a fan of some fair rides. Its not the rides them self, it is more about the people who are running them and possibly putting them together. Most don't seem to have very strict hiring practices. I think the interview goes, "do you want to work here?". Applicant says "Yes" and they say, "you can start tomorrow".

Other then that I'm good. I'm a volunteer firefighter and want to become a career firefighter. So if I had a fear of heights I would have to get over it or look for a different career.

Thank you for taking it easy on the wimp part. I also understand about the rides at the fair. I don't have a fear of heights as I can ride a plane with general ease, although sometimes, the takeoffs are a little...meh.

I saw Turk 182 when I was a kid and since then, I've always had being a volunteer firefighter in the back of my head. I can never get in shape long enough to really try to do it. I'll get started on a roll and then something crazy happens and I have to start all over. I wish you well on your quest to make it a career.

Thank you for supporting the scaredy cat!

Are the roads in Hawaii pretty straight across the island from end to end both ways? For example, in NYC, everything going north-south is an avenue for the most part and every thing going east -west are streets. Is that how it is there?

Garmin seems a popular unit in the US. Personally, I have never liked them. In my van I have an old TomTom One - super little unit. My Chrysler has one built in the dash that is a multi unit with the CD player and radio too.

Our Trailblazer has Onstar and all I have to do is hit the button and tell them where I want to go and presto they give me directions. I also have a car phone with Onstar with unlimited calling for $14.99 a month. If you ever buy a GM vehicle I highly recommend getting Onstar.

My GPS unit is always my smartphone. The problem is when it decides to revert to being a dumb phone and lose connection with the satellite. This usually happens when it's rainy/clouded over. If you drive in a city's downtown a lot, the tall buildings also affect it.

I'm old school, with the Tom Tom. Used to have a Sprint phone that had decent GPS, but then the phone broke.

I am really old school. I don't go to a lot of places where i'd need directions to find but if I need to I usually ask until I find my destination. If I am with my daughter then she'll use her smart phone to get us where we are going but not having a GPS is really no problem to me.

I use my phone, connect to bluetooth, and let the lady tell me where to go. I didn't go for the audio upgrade on my FR-S or I would have an in-dash GPS, but it seemed like a waste of money to me. I guess the only downside is that I'm using my data, but I hardly ever use it or reach the cap on it every month, and no more than I use my GPS, it's not an issue.

For some it might be a waste but for others it wouldn't be. In dash GPS also gets you a larger screen which some love. I'm looking for a Jeep JK Rubicon. I'm hoping for the in dash nav deck for some of the extra features. It isn't a deal breaker for me but it is something I will be excited to get. If I was buying new it would be something I would really think about having in it. Buying used I can't be as picky. Its bad enough that I narrowed it down to a Rubicon but that is another story.

As far as data goes. I upgraded my 1 gb/month because I was going over. Upgraded to 2 gb. I thought I was good at that point. Then in March I used 3.5 gb or so. It was a slow month at work and they don't have wifi so I had too much down time. Spent most mornings surfing. I used 500 mbs in one day. The in dash would free up data for the slow days. :D

I tend to use Google Maps which is built into my galaxy s3 phone. It does the job nicely but the downside is it relies on uaing your phone signal. So if you are lost in a remote area you really are screwed.
