Well the water is shallow, and usually all speed boats get vertical in a certain angle. So the combination of speed boat and shallow water made this video

Agree with you, even when there is not much risk from a mechanical approach because certainly this is something that happens often with high speed boats, water is always a high-risk element.

Yep! That may be common according to one of the responses but not for me! When I am on a small boat I enjoy a bit of chop...but not that extreme!

I'd be terrified to get behind one of those. I know they're in the water and everything but still going at that speed could still do some damage right? Especially if that boat lands on you when it flips over.

That video reminds me of a hydroplane race on Lake Washington in Washington state, U.S.A.
It was the boat "Miss Thriftway" that hit a good sized wave head on and went vertical. The pilot was lucky it didn't go over the top.

That is a little more than I needed or wanted to know. All I know is air got under the sponsons, the boat was going at a high rate of speed, and voila, air born. I think it was too areo dynamic!

Since you said vertical, I thought 'yeah, right before they crash!' After watching the video, wow, I bet that guy has some dirty underwear. That boat went a little past vertical, it started going over the other way, he's just lucky he came down in the water when he did.

I used to live in Washington state, U.S.A. near "Lake Washington" where they held "Hydroplane" races and I actually have observed a boat do that very thing; "tail walk". Fortunately the pilot walked away from it or should I say swam away from it unhurt.

Never road in a speedboat before, so the thought of getting vertical like that terrifies me. I think I'll stick to cabin cruisers.

I have been in fast boats as well but fortunately I have not experienced that thrill either. I have been in some close call though on rough water with waves as high as seven to eight feet on a lake. That was scary enough.

The guy wasn't very bright for gassing the engine after it came down the first time, he probably bent a stabilizer or threw the prop angle out of alignment at least when the back end came down. You could see the water spraying a lot higher after the close call.

Yep, if he bent the shaft down and the prop dug into the water too deeply that could have even been the cause along with maybe a strong head wind. I'll bet it gave him the thrill of a lifetime.

Thrill of a lifetime indeed, a log in his shorts and the wind in his hair, I bet he remembers the incident vividly still. Hopefully the repair bill wasn't too bad but boats don't often get vertical without at least some bent working parts or cracked plastics etc. It looked like rough water so he was probably more worried about flipping over completely.

And the thing is, I'm an excellent swimmer. I just know from hundreds of belly-flops that hitting the water can be a lot like hitting concrete.
