Grinding means big trouble, that should not even make a sound. Here are some possible issues:

    1. If every time you step on the clutch pedal the noise comes on, probably, clutch disc needs to be replaced.
    2. If the gearbox is the issue, the noise will be present every time the car is in motion.
    3. Check the travel of the secondary/slave clutch cylinder near the tranny; the master or slave cylinder travel may already be short and unable to reach the correct distance for the clutch assembly to clear.
    4. Check the release bearing
    5. Check the transmission oil level. To check, park on level ground, look for the oil filler hole and remove the plug. The oil level should be just at the hole, any lower you need to top up. Same with the gear oil level for the differential case, don't remove the plug on the bottom of the tranny/differential unless you are draining oil to change it.
