I've always wanted to go on a road trip across the US but haven't had the chance to do it yet. Has anyone done it before who can share their stories, what they liked about it, what they didn't?

Who would you go with on a road trip? Friends or significant other, or both?

I haven't been able to go on a road trip across the US yet, but one day I would love to! I would love to go visit Yellowstone National Park. I've heard only great things about Yellowstone and I would love to check it out for myself! I would definitely want to go with my friends. Half of the fun on a road trip is the actual driving there. It's fun to spend time with friends.

Welcome to Gearhead Central zaephyrr and leosaysmeow!

I drove up and down the east coast of the US twice. I drove from Nova Scotia to Florida and back to Nova Scotia. They were good trips overall. There is a long section in Maine and New Brunswick that are extremely boring but other then that its not too bad.

I've never really been able to take a road trip, but my idea of one always involves choosing a destination, any destination really, and then just making up the route as I go along. I enjoy seeing things I've never seen before, and that'd be the object of the trip, rather than simply driving to get somewhere specific.

I have been across the States more than one time ~ sometimes with friends and sometimes alone. I prefer traveling alone as I stop, detour and spend as much time as I want at places that are of interest to me. Everybody here is probably too young to remember the old Route 66 but it was like a long amusement park with many unique (mostly rip-off, but fun) places to stop. Here is a site with many pics of the old 66.

leosaysmeow - I strongly encourage you to go to Yellowstone National Park. It is my favorite national park (besides White Sands) in the United States. It's got a mixture of so many interesting things that you will never get bored. I you do plan on going, make sure to stay there for a good amount of time so that you can do a load of different activities. There are geysers, wildlife, bison, springs, you name it. There are other national parks around there as well so a road trip is certainly do-able.

I live in Ohio. Me and my family members will sometimes take a road trip to Atlanta Georgia or to Florida every summer.
I enjoy sightseeing and taking pictures along the way. Also it's nice to go out and have fun.

I need to see if I can find the pictures I did take but I looked at the map one day and picked a spot that I wanted to see and I thought I could make the round trip in a day. I jumped on my Yamaha R6 on my day off and off I went. I was gone 7 hours. I made it to within a few kms of the spot I pointed at on the map. I went down a long gravel road to get there and then found that the spot I wanted to get to was someones property. So I stopped short of their long driveway. It was a fun little trip that I made on my own.

I need to do that again sometime. I don't have my bike but I can take the suv and just drive (camera in the passenger seat) and enjoy the day.

I want a Jeep TJ to build up for myself and as a great build thread for the site. Then I want to do some off road runs and take lots of pics. I think the kids would like it (if the trail didn't get too crazy).

I have done some traveling across the western states back in my younger days, but I don't know if I will be doing any more of it nowdays.
When we moved to Alabama from Idaho, we sold everything, bought an older small Motorhome, loaded up ourselves and the little dogs, and headed East. We made it a fairly slow trip, stopped often so the dogs could go out, and we could stretch our legs, and at nite, we stopped at campgrounds along the way.

Since we were moving, we didn't go out of the way to see anything special, but we had a great trip coming out here, and even the dogs enjoyed the trip once they got used to riding in the Motorhome all day. We packed lightweight stuff in the overhead bunk, and we slept on the couch that pulled out into a bed, and used the facilities at the campground for showering.
After we got here, we sold the motorhome and bought a little pickup to drive around in. It was actually an enjoyable trip, and a great way to move.
We had to replace furniture, but we didn't have to haul it all across the country, and I had fun going to yard sales and finding our furniture and stuff.

I haven't really been able to take a road trip, but I'm definitely excited to start. My parents want to go across the country to the east coast and south, which is definitely exciting. I also want to take a trip across the country to Washington D.C, because I'm going to be going to a college there.

I love a bit of excitement and if there's a little hint of danger. A road trip across the U.S might not sound like something that would interest me much because you got all these conveniences and have to face the same nuances anyway. If I were to go for a road trip then most definitely it'd be in a foreign country, find a local who'll help with interpretation then hit the road.

I live in NY and I would love to do a road trip to Texas. I believe there are so many spots to hit with that end point to end point.

I have also done NY to Florida which takes about an day and it is another great trip.

But lets, be honest. I love travelling with the family, but there is nothing better than a guys road trip with the fellas. I miss those days.

So far I've been on two road trips across the U.S. One from the west coast to New York and back. One from west coast to North Carolina and back. I've been on several shorter trips also, from one state to another state, and back.

One of the cross-country trips was in a motor home. All the conveniences of home, talking on the CB radio to truckers, nice leisurely trip, stopping to eat at restaurants, pulling into rest-stops and sleeping overnight inside of the motor home on nice comfy beds.

The other trip across the U.S. was totally different. Drove non-stop in a car (only stops were restroom stops), ate on the road, drove day and night. Slept in the car. The drive was broken up between three different drivers. Got to our destination quickly, but not as leisurely as the trip in the motor home.

Traveling with friends has its perks, just as travelling with a significant other can have its perks. It is important that whoever one travels that far with, they have a good rapport with, otherwise things may not go as smoothly as you'd like. Thankfully both of my trips were smooth.

My daughter is thinking about a cross-country trip, and when she goes, she has invited me to come along.
On her last trip out to visit family in Idaho, she bought an older Dodge Motorhome, and now she wants to drive it home to Alabama.
I love traveling with my daughter, and we always have a lot of fun together, so I am looking forward to the trip to bring home "Grimm" , the new toy, named after her favorite TV program with the strange old camper trailer in it.
I don't know when we will be traveling, since it depends on her work schedule, but when we are for sure going, then I can put in more details about the upcoming road trip.

Sounds like it would be a good trip. Are you two just going to get right home or are you going to take your time and enjoy the drive?

I have been across the US from Michigan to the west coast over a dozen times. Depending on the season, you can go northern routes or southern routes. The first time I went I didn't use a map and went with a high school buddy, leaving Michigan and first headed south and then just followed the roads west. It was an adventure to have no plan, but in subsequent trips, I kept adding states that I had not yet visited. I also took many trips from Michigan to Florida, often on car hunting trips. I just recently wrote a post about "eating your way cross country" and I assure you that is part of the fun.

I like goin' long road trip, but if possible on summer. I would like to go with my partner or family or close friends, ofcourse with a lot of foods and camping stuffs. It would be great if we can camp somewhere and have some barbeque on the beach :) oh, I can just imagine how great that would be!
